How To Verify Your Homestead Exemption

Hi Friends, Did you know that starting in 2024 a new tax law (see Section 11.43) requires homeowners to periodically re-apply for their homestead exemption? I recently called Dallas Central Appraisal District (DCAD) at 214-631-0910 and spoke with customer support to find out more. Here's what I learned:
The Dallas Central Appraisal District will now mail one random "re-application letter" within 5 years of your last approval. (Although there can be exceptions to this. In the event of an audit, you may receive a letter sooner.)
You’ll have 30 days to respond to this letter—or risk losing your exemption status and having to restart the entire application process. Which can take an extended amount of time.
The letter will have "Homestead Exemption Application Enclosed" in red text printed on the outside of the envelope. Some may offer an online option, but most will require the mailing of a paper form.
The customer support representative recommended I verify my exemption status at least once a year to decrease the risk of any surprise issues. I verified mine right then on the phone with her, and I also used the DCAD website to verify my exemption. See the steps below.
Check the Status of Your Homestead Exemption Online:
Go to this webpage: https://www.dallascad.org/SearchOwner.aspx?type=Homestead
Enter the last name and first name of the first name on your deed. Click Search.
On the next screen click on the blue hyperlink for your address in the "Property Address" field of the table.
On the next screen scroll down to the "Exemptions" section, and click on the "Exemption Details" blue hyper link below that table.
The next screen should show "Homestead %" is 100% in the table.
Even if you do see "100%", I still highly recommend contacting the Dallas Central Appraisal District during business hours to verify your homestead exemption and ensure you understand these recent changes.
